Performance Art 2006

Na of Broken

The monologues I wrote are for a character that is loosely based on my life and heritage.  “Na of Broken”, Na is the character’s name whose is from a place called Broken.  All facets are vested with words, a wordsmith, anthropologist of the dictionary, and a forensic scientist of the human condition born into monologues for Na.  I have found that the deeper I dig into her voice the louder she gets.  The character is gauze to talk through so not to attach the words to me personally.  Her story is one that is unique to her and even though some of the moments in my life could parallel with her, Na of Broken is herself.

Na of Broken is a series of performance art that has an undetermined end.  The first two I have produced are  "Internal Eternal" and "Ruined Wash".

Legislated Family

The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) of the 1990’s which lead me to the history of marriage; how is language dictating civil law.  The idea of a legal contract being entered into from the beginning sounds like a purchase of property.  If marriage is a contract why is DOMA saying who can be in a contract.  This led me to the violence against women and not having civil rights to pursue legal action towards their spouse; how is language oppressing.  The idea that gender is a socialized condition that dictates what rights you have has lead me to the current work in-progress about gender; how can gender be tyrannical.  The list of topics and concept-based works has the common thread of language.   The language we use towards children based on social confines of their gender; it is all related.  The irony is that I am using art as a language to create dialogue about language.

"Legislated Family" was produced in response to the research I conducted concerning the concept of family in America.
